Cesena
Curca Caesena; the name given to Cesena by the Romans for the characteristic route of via Emilia, which at this point winds along the last descents of the Apennines. Cesena is an attractive small town which houses some artistic gems and many interesting things.
Visitors must visit the sights that represent traces left behind by the Malatesta family (1377-1465). Of particular interest is the library, one of the most valuable pieces of evidence of humanistic culture, of which the building, furnishings and heritage of books have remained intact up to present day. On the doorway of the first floor there is an elephant, heraldic symbol of the Malatesta family, to welcome you. The Rocca on the hill Garampo, a fortress which dates back to the same period (mid 15th century) is an imposing piece of military engineering featuring ramparts and two large, square-shaped towers. Today the cultural vivacity of this town is evident in its richness of museums, both valuable and unusual, such as the Museum of Musical Instruments , the Theatre Museum and the Cinema Museum . The later contains both Italian and foreign cinematic material; photographs of scenes, subjects and original scripts written by film directors such as Bertolucci and Pasolini.
The plains in front of Cesena consist of densely urbanised and cultivated areas with a hilly background. On one of the hills lies a small town, Sogliano sul Rubicone, which is invaded by the sharp smell of cheese every 25 November. This is the day on which the cheese is removed from the tufo (solified lava) pits in which they have been stored for three months. The mixed fragrance of moss, sulphur and truffles enriches the cheese making this pit cheese ( " formaggio di fossa " Doc) unique.
The defence of traditional culture consisting in rituals, gastronomy and various forms of handicraft blends in with an opening to innovation which has made this zone one of the districts in Italy with the most advanced technology and industry. A worthy example: Technogym which was founded in Cesena in 1983 and is at present the world leader in the production of fitness and biomedical rehabilitation equipment. Technogym has 9 subsidiaries abroad and 950 employees and is the official supplier for the athletic preparation of the Ferrari team, Juventus, Milan and Inter football teams, as well as the athletes in the Athens 2004 and Turin 2006 Olympics. Its owner, Nerio Alessandrini, has created a company which includes among its social activities a project that aims to export a model to represent wellness (regular physical exercise, healthy diet and positive thinking) beyond Romagna .
Another excellent business in the province of Cesena: the production of top quality women's footwear. In the district of San Mauro Pascoli alone, there are 4 of the top 15 firms in the world involved in the sector of women's shoes: Sergio Rossi, Gimmi Baldinini, Casadei and Pollini.
